BC Renal now has a
web page focused on addressing the needs of approximately 6,000 British Columbians living with glomerulonephritis (GN). Many of these individuals would typically look to information based in the United States and elsewhere, which isn’t always relevant, so a BC resource better addresses their needs.
Project manager Yuriy Melnyk explains additional reasons why a BC Renal GN page is helpful: “People who live with GN have some unique needs. On the one hand, their health challenges are quite different from those of other kidney patients. On the other hand, their voices and needs may not have been as united or addressed due to the relative rarity of GN compared to more common chronic kidney diseases. With this in mind, we have aimed to create a BC-focused resource that provides relevant information and helps unite this patient population.”
Yuriy adds that the new web page was informed by input from several patient partners and that it’s a first step with plans underway to introduce a “web page 2.0” with more features in 2023.
GN refers to a group of diseases that cause inflammation and damage to the parts of the kidney that filter blood (called glomeruli). Only a small percentage of people with GN will have kidney failure and need dialysis or a kidney transplant. The remaining people are successfully treated with medication and lifestyle changes.
